Meandering to Jerusalem

Arles

Our logo

We arrived in Arles in the late afternoon yesterday. The temperature was 75F (23C) as we got off the plane in Beziers. The wind was light and the sun bright. Wonderful.

The only hitch on the journey was an hour stall on the RR from Beziers. A “broken track” held us hostage as trains from both directions seeped through on the only operating track.

Last night and this afternoon we visited with Babette and Paul, writers of the Lightfood Guides to the Via Francigena who live here. We have communicated long via email. But it was great visiting face to face. We learned a lot about each other and they shared their knowledge of the route immediately in front of us to the east into Italy. They are working on a book on this link between the Camino de Santiago and the Via Francigena. Look for it in January 2011. Thanks for everything Paul and Babette.

Tomorrow we take our first steps on our new meanderings.

Rain

Our logo

It’s raining in Gutersloh, Germany. We’ll head south Wednesday. Lot of little projects to complete here first but I’m ready. Supposed to rain traces on Friday when we start walking. I can live with it. Have a great week.

A New Name

Our logo

During our time off we changed the emphasis of our pilgrimage from “walking east” to “meandering to Jerusalem.” We will still walk but no longer are we going to walk that direct path we have been walking. Now we will follow the path that draws us, whether it is on foot or in a bus, train, car, or boat, whether it is east, north, south, or west. When we come to a crossroads, we will decide which way to go and it will not always be the shortest way to Jerusalem. The journey is more the destination than before.

Even though WalkingEast.com does not reflect our exact emphasis now, we are keeping this URL because everyone knows it already. But to emphasize the change, we have changed the name of the journal to Meandering to Jerusalem.

Back in Germany

Our logo

We have returned to Germany and will be back on the walk in the beginning of October, walking east out of Arles, France, where we stopped on June 19.

We thank so many who made our three-month stay in California really pleasant. We especially want to thank Helga and Alex in Atascadero who hosted us for several days as we first returned and then again as we were about to leave. We really appreciate their friendship and help.

During our stay in California we spent over a month camping in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Lake Edison most of that time. At one point we almost opted to stay checking out two different Honda Fits as potential candidates for transportation. But in the end, as we said in an earlier post on Part 1, our excitement over continuing the walk won out over any logic urging us to stay.

Welcome to Part 2 of Walking East

Our logo

Welcome. As we begin the last third of our pilgrimage, we also begin a new version of our Walking East Journal. I tried to make the comments work again on the original journal (now ‘Part 1′) but I have not been able to do so. So I created a new page (this one, ‘Part 2′) that we will use from here forward to Jerusalem.

You can always go between Part 2 and Part 1 by clicking on the link on the upper right column on either of the pages. From now forward, however, when you enter WalkingEast.com, you will come to this Part 2 page. Click on the link for Part 1 to view any earlier posts.

Since I removed the maps ffom the header pictures, I changed the tab heading Route to Maps to make it clearer where you can go to see the route maps.
